This leads to the production of some five hundred different products, including harmful acid. The acid corrodes the teeth causing cavities that eventually collapse, leaving a hole in the tooth.

The name given to the bad bacteria that causes tooth decay is Streptococcus mutans. This bacteria is so destructive that can damage the tooth enamel causing its collapse in a period as short as six months. Sometimes it takes more time, perhaps a few years or, if you're lucky, it may take up to 8 years.

The most common places for cavities to appear is in the small space between the teeth. Even if you brush your teeth well and often you will see that this can be incredibly difficult to clean these areas with a toothbrush. To prevent rot in this area, you should make a habit of flossing regularly.
