- What is it?
Dental implants are artificial roots that connect each false teeth or bridges in the jaw. They are made of titanium screws and crowns to give a permanent relationship. Titanium is a material that provides strength and long life in this context.

- Who invented these devices?
A Swedish doctor named Dr. Brånemark read trends bone regeneration when he discovered the effect of using this material with humans.

Delhi docs develop cheaper dental implants

A group of Delhi-based scientists claimed to have developed cheaper dental implants which may help reduce dependence on expensive imported devices.

Dental implants are the answer to the problem of missing teeth. It replaces both the lost natural tooth and its root. It is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jaw to hold a replacement tooth.
In India, dentist have to depend on imported dental implants which are expensive.

Dr Mahesh Verma, Director and Principal of Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences and Professor Naresh Bhatnagar with the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, claimed to have successfully
accomplished the animal trials for their newly-developed dental implants.

"We have indigenously developed dental implants. This completely replicates the international standards. At present, we are doing the human trials after we got successful and encouraging results from our animal trials," Dr Verma said.

"There was a need to develop this as imported implants are extremely expensive. Only one dental implant costs the government around Rs 17,000 - Rs 18,000. ( 400$ to 500$ ) If we consider the same implant for someone who has lost all the 32 teeth, the expense will be huge. Moreover, we want to have our own product," he said.

In order to meet the international standards in terms of design, size, type of material and coating, help from IIT was sought.

Once the human trials are over, this technology could be passed off to an Indian manufacturer who will develop the same and make the implants available in Indian market at reasonably cheaper rates, Dr Verma said.

He cautioned, "Not all people who lose tooth are ideal candidates for an implant. We consider only those who have good oral health. He or she should have adequate bones in the jaw and his gums should be free form diseases which is needed to support the implant."

Dental Implants: Their History And Facts

Most people are aware that they can replace missing teeth, crowns or dentures, but not many know that they have no access to dental implants. These systems mimic natural teeth, and removal is not required on a daily basis and special cleaning. Although they can be expensive, are durable and can be used to support bridges and other dental devices.

Almost all implants used today are implanted into the bone and look like real roots of the teeth, unlike the old method that uses a flat surface in the form of sheet or implanted within the jaw bone screw . Using this type of dental appliance back to the Mayan civilization, when the pieces of shell or other durable materials were used to replace missing teeth. Although scientists thought that these substitutions are inserted after the death, Dr. Amador Bobbio discovered that the bone had grown up, or integrated with materials indicating that inserted in life. In 1950 and 1960, studied at Cambridge University and Swedish orthopedic surgeon PI Brånemark began using titanium in studies relating to the restoration of bones and blood flow in vivo. These studies have confirmed that titanium has bone growth and integrate so tightly around the bone that actually adheres to metal.

Several years of research and clinical trials led to a patent for titanium dental implants in the United States in 1969. In the following decades, more than seven million Brånemark system have been places and hundreds of companies to produce and manufacture them. Current researchers are developing new technologies with zirconia ceramics of this procedure, but may be many years before these materials to replace the use of titanium in maxillofacial prosthetics.

This type of device requires tapered screw-like root of the tooth in the socket, or the bones of a missing tooth. This can be done either immediately after removal of the tooth, or when the site is fully healed. When surgery is completed, the root or allow osseointegration of titanium and bone growth and to comply with the device. This time varies from person to person, but can be up to 18 months. With the integration of the bones is complete, the actual prosthetic tooth or crown is placed on the titanium root. The success of this type of action is about 95 percent if the patient is generally healthy and does not require additional procedures such as breast lift and implant surgery.

artificial teeth should not be removed and may be treated as natural teeth. They are not subject to decay and mimic the natural shape of the patient's tooth, preserving the patient's natural bite. There can be risks involved in any type of surgery, and only oral surgeon can decide if your health and the overall situation will allow this type of prosthesis to use. It is important to ask your surgeon about all the options and risks before deciding what is best for your situation and overall health.

Improving Your Smile with Dental Implants

Dental ImplantsDental implants and mini dental implants are one of the most functional and effective ways to fix missing or broken teeth. The process of receiving these implants is bearable, and, after a few appointments, you will be able to have a mouth just as efficient as it was before your teeth became damaged.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The first step in the dental implant process is the initial consultation and examination. Dental implants are not for everyone, so the dentist will examine your teeth and take x-rays to determine if your jawbones are healthy enough to receive implants.
The actual procedure for dental implants involves two stages. On the first appointment, your dentist will need to insert a metal implant that acts as the root for the new tooth. This first appointment will likely proceed as follows:
  1. The dentist will administer anesthesia at the location of the dental implant.
  2. The gum tissue is opened to expose the bone.
  3. A special drill is used to create a hole in the jawbone for the metal implant.
  4. The implant is placed in the bone, and the gum tissue is stitched together or a cover screw is placed over the implant.
The healing process that follows is called osseointegration. Basically, the implant bonds to the bone, ensuring the durability of the dental implant. Osseointegration usually takes about three to six months.
The second visit occurs after osseointegration is complete. This procedure usually goes as follows:
  1. The implant is re-exposed and a post is attached.
  2. A crown is placed over the post and the procedure is complete.
In some cases, a temporary crown is placed on the post so that the gums can heal around the shape of a natural tooth while a permanent tooth or teeth are made. Once the gum tissue has healed, the permanent crown replaces the temporary one.

Alternate Procedures

While traditional dental implant procedures occur in two visits, some dentists and oral surgeons perform the entire process in one visit. With this approach, no time is taken for osseointegration. As a result, the patient cannot chew normally until the site of the dental implant has fully healed.

Mini Dental Implants

Before you decide to receive a full dental implant, consider a mini dental implant. Mini dental implants are used to replace incisors or other small teeth. Because these implants are not as big as other dental implants, they do not cost as much. Another advantage of mini dental implants is that if damage occurs to the implant, you will not need bone grafting to repair it.

Determining Good Candidates for Dental Implants

Most people with missing or broken teeth are good candidates for dental implants or mini dental implants. However, there are some limitations. Those who do not qualify for dental implants include individuals on immune-suppressing medication and children (you need all your adult teeth).
In addition, you need to have a solid bone structure for the implants to be successful. If the bone is weakened, implants can be applied after the bone is strengthened or re-grown through bone grafting.

Cost of Dental Implants

The cost of dental implants varies a great deal on a number of factors, including:
  • insurance
  • materials used in the process
  • location of implant
  • the dentist or oral surgeon you choose (Higher profile and more experienced dentists will charge more).
The average cost of one dental implant ranges from $500 to $6,000. If you require a full mouth of dental implants, you can expect to pay anywhere from $24,000 to $100,000. The cost of mini dental implants also varies widely, but they are not as expensive as full dental implants.
Usually, dental insurance does not cover the cost of dental implants since they are mostly cosmetic fixes, rather than medical necessities. However, if you are involved in an accident, some insurance providers will cover the cost of dental implants.

How An Erupted Tooth Can Promote Gingivitis

A partially broken tooth is a tooth that has not fully proved by the gums. Partially broken teeth are particularly difficult to clean around and they are susceptible to gingivitis. When gingivitis occurs in the region around a portion broken tooth, the condition is known as pericoronitis. It is more common in the wisdom teeth, which can often be affected and may remain slightly protruding through the gum line.

Especially if the wisdom teeth on the upper jaw occur before those on the lower jaw, upper teeth bite on the affected tooth, which can cause irritation and increase the chances of infection.

If you develop pericoronaritis, your dentist can remove the entire area around the tooth to remove debris. He or she may take x-rays to see if the tooth is likely to appear. If the tooth seems likely to remain affected, the dentist will probably recommend having two wisdom teeth removed upper and lower. Sometimes the two teeth are removed during the same visit, the teeth, but some dentists advise them on separate occasions. It is generally a good idea to remove two wisdom teeth top and bottom if it is likely to remain affected whether you want to increase the risk of gingivitis caused by a misalignment of teeth.

Only certified orthodontists are qualified to apply braces. Orthodontists are essentially dentists with a couple of extra years of training in advanced practices. Standard dentists without this advanced training are not qualified to work with braces.
What are the signs that braces might be necessary?
If any of these conditions are present, you might want to talk to your orthodontist about the possibility of braces:
• teeth that are crowded or out of position
• frequent cheek biting
• severe over-or under-bite
• difficulty chewing or swallowing
• an off-center bite
• teeth growing in behind others
• teeth out of proportion with others
• a too-prominent or too-weak chin
• strange teeth position as a result of tooth loss
• noises in the jaw
• large spaces between the teeth
What causes misaligned teeth?
Genetics play a large role in determining how the teeth grow in, but other factors such as finger sucking, pacifier sucking, poor toothbrushing, gum disease, and early loss of baby teeth can also contribute to malocclusions.
How do braces work?
Braces work by applying slow and steady pressure to the teeth and jaw over a period of months or years. In children, as the teeth naturally grow, the braces harness that growth to guide the teeth into a proper position. In adults, the braces themselves have to apply the pressure, and it usually takes a much longer time for the benefits to be seen.
When should children visit an orthodontist?
Orthodontic organizations recommend that children should have their first consultation by the age of 7. However, if you suspect that your child may have an orthodontic problem, it’s never too early for a checkup. Remember that orthodontics is a preventative field, so the earlier a problem is caught, the more chance there is of correcting the problem.

Also keep away from foods like nuts, popcorn, rice, sesame seeds, which can get stuck in the surgical area. You can gradually switch to solid foods. Your dentist will probably recommend antibiotics and antimicrobial mouth rinse. Find out how often and how you should use.

To disinfect the site of implantation, rinse the mouth with a saline solution of hot water and then spit it out carefully. You may feel pain or discomfort when the jawbone begins to develop around the stations of dental titanium implants. Use pain relievers counter pain relief. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid postoperative complications. If something unexpected happens, it is best to consult your physician form. The healing process may take 6 to 12 weeks. What Is Root Canal Treatment ?

Root canal is a dental procedure which helps in removing the entire internal parts, mainly pulp chamber of the tooth. It also involves the filling of the prepared empty cavity with a suitable bio-compatible material. This procedure is done and advised only when the tooth can not compensate restoring material in a small cavity on the surface. The procedure involves the removal of the nervous elements of the tooth which have been infected or decayed already due to microbial action or any physical pressures.
The procedure that involves the root canal is also called as root canal therapy or root canal treatment. This is the only procedure that can help when the entire pulp and its contents are decayed. This procedure of root canal treatment can be done by a general dentist, but the one who specializes in this field is an Endodontist.
How is a root canal treatment done?
  1. The dentist diagnoses a patient and advices for the treatment if the root canal is decayed.
  2. The tooth area is isolated with the help of rubber dam kit, which is a rubber sheet fitted with the help of clamps or clips around the tooth which is going to be treated. This isolation helps in ease of operation for the dentist and prevents the entry of mixing of fluids from the motor and the saliva in the mouth.
  3. The dentist would then prepare a cavity by the help of an aerotor which is done with proper outline and depth into the root, but this does not eliminate all the contents of the pulp chamber. Then the root canal files are used to entirely clean the root. These root canal files increase in thickness when they enter the root and help in removal of the pulp of the tooth.
  4. After this is done, there are 2 ways of which one is chosen by the dentist – Either do everything else in a single seating or sealing the cavity with a soothing medicine with a temporary filling material for a week until the next seating is called for the completion of the procedure.
  5. The use of soothing medicine is that it prevents the spread of further infection, if there was any prior to the cavity preparation, or also prevention of occurrence of any new infection in that region.
  6. The final stage includes the filling of the canal with some plastic material called Gutta Percha which are bio-compatible, and after the canal is filled, a suitable and aesthetic regular cement filling is done over it, which can be accompanied with crown placement sometimes.

How many seatings are required?
The dentist would try to make the treatment planning for the ease of the patient, but there are a few factors which decide the amount of chair time and the number of seatings-
  1. The position of tooth in the mouth, maxillary molars take more time than the mandibular ones.
  2. Number of roots present in a tooth and number of root canals seen in the roots, as each of the canal is to be emptied and filled with the filling material.
  3. The length and thickness of root canals.
  4. Previous procedures – If the tooth has gone through some treatment earlier, like crown placement, then it takes more time for the entire procedure rather than the normal tooth with some small filling.
Some facts to remember -
Root canals are done to protect a tooth, the calcified tissues of the tooth. This helps in maintaining the jaw integrity. If the entire tooth is extracted, the space in between the adjacent teeth can lead to shifting around of those teeth if a bridge or implant placement is not done rightly there. So, a root canal treatment is advised for the protection of the tooth during an infection.
The thickness of the calcified structure would be considered by the dentist as they are more brittle and can break down. So to maintain and restore a tooth structure, crown placement is usually done.
Any endodontic infection is accompanied with swelling due to inflammation of that region, which occurs after the necrosis or death of the oral tissue. This, if not taken care of, will spread to all the parts of the oral cavity and sometimes would lead to some medical complications in severe cases.
When root canal is done, it does not make the tooth entirely dead. Removal of the pulp contents do not make the tooth dead. The reason for this is that the tooth still gets adequate nourishment from the adjacent tissues and from the alveolar bone. So it is not regarded as a dead tooth, and it can be restored and maintains the integrity of the alveolar bone and dental arch when a crown is placed over it.
When is root canal advised?
  1. Severe toothache which is during chewing or during contact with any extreme hot or extreme cold temperature material which is usually tolerated by the mouth.
  2. Constant tooth pain during mastication or chewing
  3. Darkening of the tooth
  4. Swelling seen in the areas of gums around the tooth
Believe in these before going for a root canal -
  1. Patients fear of root canal – It was believed to be one of the most painful procedure in dentistry and every patient who was advised to have root canal done used to fear to go to the dentist. But this is not a problem now, as good anesthetics are available which can subside the pain.
  2. It is not time consuming – Earlier it used to take many visits for the completion of the root canal and this caused disturbance in the schedules of the patients and it was a hard task for them. Now it takes not more than 2 visits for the completion of the entire procedure.
  3. Pain is not the only symptom – As said above, root canal should be done to prevent an infection, only the pain can not be taken as a factor to consider. If there is no pain in a particular region but there is some swelling with discoloration, the dentist have to properly check for the infection.
  4. Better than extraction – It was believed entirely reverse of this. People used to believe in the fact that getting the tooth removed completely would be better than having root canal done. But maintaining the natural tooth for long can be helpful in proper chewing and strengthening of the tooth.
Also the cost for extraction is followed by its next procedure like removable denture or implant, which costs more than a root canal procedure.
  5. Pregnant women – There are suitable anesthetics available for pregnant women and the x-ray required during the root canal treatment is small and focused only in the mouth region, so does not affect the abdominal region. So there is no restriction for pregnant women and they can have the root canal done, but prior to the treatment, the dentist should be kept aware about the fact that the patient is pregnant.

Dental Implant Options: What Is CEREC?

Due to a national need, dental implant technology has been developing rapidly. CEREC® represents a component of that development, allowing crowns to be created in your Austin dentist’s office without having to be sent off to a lab technician.

What Is CEREC®?

CEREC® is offered through a company called Sirona. Founded in 1997, Sirona primarily produces dental equipment, but they also invest in dental research to be able to offer the most cutting-edge, innovative products to their customers. CEREC stands for CEramic REConstruction, since CEREC® creates ceramic-based crowns. Over 15 million CEREC® procedures have occurred worldwide, according to Sirona’s website.

CEREC® creates material for inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns and dental implants. Although there are a variety of ceramic materials which the periodontist can choose to fabricate the composite blocks of the crown, they are all ceramic, allowing them to blend in with the coloration of natural teeth.

For normal crown creation, a patient must make two dentist appointments. The first appointment lets your Austin periodontist creates an impression, then they send it off and a laboratory creates the permanent crown from the impression. The second appointment involves the actual installation of the new crown. CEREC® cuts out the middle man, using “Computer-Assisted Design-Computer-Assisted Manufacture” or “CAD-CAM.” This technology allows a computer to create the crown instead of an outsourced lab technician.

CEREC® Advantages

The biggest advantage to in-office crown creations is inherent in the title – they are conducted entirely in-office. It offers convenience and savings to the patient. No temporary crown is required to bridge the gap between the mold and the permanent crown; temporary crowns, because they’re generic, tend to irritate people’s gum tissue. The savings your Austin periodontist gets from eliminating an outsourced job comes back to you, saving you the cost of the lab.

Since they’re entirely ceramic, CEREC® crowns blend in cosmetically with the rest of your smile.

CEREC® Disadvantages

Although they blend in with your teeth better than a metal filling, CEREC® crowns use a single block to create the crown, eliminating the visual textures inherent to organic teeth.

Many dentists do not offer CEREC®.
