Why Well Fitting Mouth Trays Are Essential When Whitening Your Teeth

If you want to whiten your teeth and restore them to their natural colour, you have several options in this day and age. You can get them whitened by your dentist, you can use whitening strips or you can use a tray based product. Indeed it is the tray based products I want to talk about in this article, and in particular why they must be a good fit.

Let me first of all explain how these tray based whitening products actually work. You can buy them from your local health store or pharmacist, and they are relatively cheap compared to a professional dental treatment. Furthermore the results can be just as good if you use a good quality product.

When you take it home and open it up, you will generally find some whitening gel, a syringe and some custom mouth trays. They will often come with some instructions as well, but they are pretty easy to use.

The custom mouth trays are there so you can shape them to fit perfectly around your teeth (because everyone's teeth are obviously unique to each individual). They can be moulded to your teeth really easily. You just need to expose them to hot water in order for them to become soft and pliable.

Once you have your trays, you can then start the whitening process. This generally involves putting some gel into the upper and lower trays, and fitting them to your teeth for around 30 minutes each time.

However the important point is of course the shaping of the trays because if you don't fit them correctly, you may not achieve the results you were hoping for. Some people struggle to mould them correctly. So it pays to take your time getting it right.

The trays should be fairly tight because if they are too loose, you may well find that the whitening gel starts to escape and leak into your mouth. This could lead to the gums and lips becoming inflamed by the gel, and you may even swallow some of the gel, which you obviously want to avoid.

So the point is that whichever product you choose, you must make sure that the trays fit your teeth perfectly. Unfortunately the quality of the mouth trays differs from product to product. So you may have a really powerful whitening gel, but cannot get the benefit of this because you cannot get the trays to fit properly.

Therefore if all else fails, you should consider going to your dentist and asking them to make up some trays for you. The fact is that anyone can whiten their teeth using these tray based products, so it pays to get trays that fit your teeth properly if you want to achieve the desired results and avoid any leakage.
