Dental college gets nod to admit new batch

The Union ministry of health and family welfare has accorded permission for admitting the fifth batch of students at Dr Harvansh Singh Judge (HSJ) Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital of Panjab University for 2010-11. The Dental Council of India (DCI) had denied extension of affiliation to PU's dental college, stating that the varsity had failed to fulfil DCI norms.

DCI, which regulates dental education in the country, had reportedly rejected extension of affiliation to institute of dental sciences earlier this year. The provisional affiliation is sought by institutes each year till they have the stipulated infrastructure and other requirements in place.

Official sources said in a communication sent to the university, the under secretary to Union government, Anita Tandon, said a committee constituted under the chairmanship of dean, Maulana Azad Medical College, considered the matter in consultation with DCI and observed that all new appointments were made in the faculty positions and the faculty members had joined the institute. There, the panel added the deficiencies in the faculty position in the institute were now corrected.

PU officials said in view of this, Union government on the recommendation made by the committee has granted permission to Dr HS Judge Institute of Dental Sciences for admitting the fifth batch of students with 100 seats for the academic year 2010-11. Officials said permission had been granted by the ministry on the basis of a DCI inspection conducted on July 23.

The four-year-old institute, located in PU's south campus in Sector 25, has a student intake capacity of 100 every year. Meanwhile, 100 fresh students joined the department in July.
